He also taught me that most locksmiths aren't ex-cons, as I used to think, and not to trust builders. Our locks have been set up providing everyone and their brother access to my pad.
So give a call to Steve. While you're on the job, he will be sure nobody's using your wet bar.
Steve taught me everything I know about locks. He did a fantastic job installing a deadbolt that is new and re-keying my locks after an attempted break in.

* please note, I rarely leave reviews and if I am 100% convinced I will give a 5 star rating
In my experience, he has swapped for an entire house out lock sets and dead bolts. He's replaced cylinders for bolts and preexisting locks. He's drilled out doors (aluminum, steel, wood, etc.. .) And frames so as to set up a deadbolt (see photo). He's dismantled old locks, determined the malfunctioning piece inside the lock, and repaired it (either by having/finding that the essential component, or by making it). He's picked locks for which the secret was missing, and determined where to get a new key. Steve is also able to explain so that you understand whatever challenges he faces everything he's doing.
I have been the beneficiary of the stellar support about a dozen times of Steve to get properties within the previous five years and I will gladly attest to his expertise and expertise, his patience and abilities, and his thoroughness and the quality of his work. I have not presented a challenge he didn't resolve properly.

Since there are many old buildings using locks dating back up to a 100 years or 39, as I've heard from Steve, the capacity to dismantle and repair locks is crucial in DC. Also, many lock makers have gone out of business through the years, and there is no limit to the amount of different lock designs that have been used over the decades. Steve will not pretend he's seen what *, but following several decades he's seen he and most definitely enjoys a challenge.
Steve keeps late hours and he w/ a list of acquaintances. Scheduling can be tough and he often runs late. I don't advise calling him if you need help at this time. You can be patient and if you require high excellent service, Steve can do the work right the first time and he can recommend the best product to use also. HIGHLY Suggested

I have used three occasions now to Steve, once to make a key to add a deadbolt to an existing door , and finally once to replace a cylinder that was tacky on my lock. In every situation, the work done was superb, although in all three cases, there were scheduling difficulties. Steve helped pick a deadbolt brand and version that could accept a cylinder that was different to match the key in the lock that was current. He managed to cut a hole absolutely such that you wouldn't understand it was a late inclusion. His job was phenomenal. You want the most professional locksmith, and if you have patience and the time to spare, reach out to Steve.

Fantastic service! Steve is equally as good as it gets. I have used work him friends homes locks and adjustments. He does it all. You can not go wrong with all the Lock Doctor.

Steve came as a recommendation and was fantastic. He understands locks and is pleased to explain them to you personally and what his way to mending or solving a problem is. He helped solve an issue with a few of my gates with an ingenuity that saved me from a full gate replacement. Its rare to find someone deeply knowledgable and polite to boot. Highly recommend.

Consistently fantastic service! Employed him 3 times in the previous 4 decades. Honest priced, polite knowledgeable and doesn't gold plate problems. His late hours also make it convenient! Please be aware he's a 1 man show which may clarify some of those negative remarks regarding scheduling. I find this since the locksmith technically has your key or knows the combo and continues to be in your home so that I feel better that it's only 1 individual with access to the information rather than a company of many.

We tried to use Steve's locksmith solutions to change the locks and add some new locks and security bars in our home into the sliding glass doors. He missed our initial appointment but was apologetic, so we decided to give him a second opportunity. But he arrived late for our rescheduled appointment and when asked the reason, he just said he has been"running behind recently". He was thorough and knowledgeable but there have been additional delays in getting a proposal and ordering materials that are desired. He then failed to affirm an installation date and time to reach him. We ended up choosing to utilize the following locksmith after what finally amounted in inadequate communication on his part and delays.

He is very considerate with great communication skills. He arrives on time and returns calls promptly. Really, what more could you ask for?
I utilized his services back. I was so busy settling into DC which I forgot to write a review. But he accomplishes this, so here I am! He was very economical when compared to other locksmiths, anywhere from 50-100% cheaper in some circumstances. It was a sample, although I can't say I called an exhaustive collection of all DC locksmiths.
Hundreds of dollars can run to replace if you are like me, having a condo in a high rise. Before you do that, get a house call from the Lock Doctor!
P.S.. We had a fascinating conversation about scams. You can search NPR's site.
Although the cost lured me in, it was the quality of work that offered me. He is clearly knowledgeable about his commerce. He does not attempt to upsell any merchandise. When repairing my lock, letting me know all the probable results beforehand, he was very frank. He managed to fix it without having to use parts , while each locksmith was convinced I would have to replace my lock! He adjusted the nut plate for a better match in the door frame.

Steve was used by me this past week for the first time.
Call the contact number and leave a message. He'll return to you within a day or 2. (He called me back a day after I left my message) He was able to come to my place. Perfect service, and quite reasonably priced. This is 1 case where I am quite thankful for Yelp because Yelp is what made me decide to give a try.

Postscript: somebody mentioned that does not have a particular address, which is sort of funny given my remarks above. I think he works just onsite and does not maintain a physical shop front (as scammer locksmith I utilized fraudulently advertised). He lives so the area is represented by that .
The locksmith from the Lock Doctor arrived and only bent a piece of metal from the mechanism which had become warped from the cold weather. Obviously, the bill was near $895.
This guy is excellent. The locksmith I called to take a look at the front door said our current lock was unfix-able and wanted to charge $895 to replace the mechanism.
If you would like to discover more. If the locksmith jacks up the cost after doing the work you are currently using wants to be paid upfront, or works out of a fake address, you need to beware. Had an address at Park and 14th roads directly around the corner from me, but I went out there and there wasn't any locksmith anyplace on the block.
BTW, the Lock Doctor locksmith told me there is a scam going on with locksmiths. I found an article at

We can't understand all the excellent reviews for Steve. When we bought our home last spring, Steve came out to change our locks . We asked him to install another. He performed the job and scheduled a time to come back and finish. He was a no-show for our scheduled appointment and the one later. He never returned our phone calls and just vanished.

Steve is a really super man. He has been used by us for our clientele and also for our rentals too.
Reasonable pricing reliable and friendly. What else can you ask for.
We already have him scheduled for longer tasks.

He is the real deal; excellent locksmith although it's a portable surgery.
On time, nice guy, very good work, reasonable prices.
Needed to get the doorway rekeyed and the back door and moved into a new place in Eckington substituted by a single. Answer from him and simple to envision when I had to reschedule because of work.

I phoned around to get estimates for a lock-out that was simple. The first ten places I spoke to wouldn't guarantee a cost -- rather, it was usually"we will come out for $30, then repairs can run $40 and up."
The Lock Doctor, however, gave me a horizontal cost up front and it was at the end of what the costs the other men quoted. He then showed up on time, and was able to get me without damaging the lock.

That is a long overdue post, but I have utilized Lock Doctor times over the past few years for the two lockouts and at my workplace. Steve does quite work at a great cost and is quick to respond. He helped with a variety of odd jobs at a building I handle and charged a very reasonable rate even though the task was unique and required several visits. Steve, Thank you!

Oh, he opened a wall safe that hadn't been opened in 30 decades, without wrecking it. Amazing. I would recommend him.
I contacted Steve to open a wall protected. I wasn't in a hurry so emailed him. The man is busy (b/c he is so great ). He explained, we came over a week, and talked about what he might do. The man is a gem. .

I called the Lock Doctor when we bought our house to straighten out our lock situation. We had six different keys (so many that the old owner forgot to attract one at settlement), a missing cylinder on one lock, and another lock which would not work. We were a locksmith's bonanza just sitting there, but Steve really took the time and thought to minimize the amount of locks that are new we needed to buy, replacing and rekeying most.
The missing cylinder was on a safety gate/storm door which came from an obscure manufacturer that does not make them. Steve went the excess mile.
This is a one-person store, and lock repair can often drag on. We've had to reschedule a variety of times because he was stuck trying to finish a job that took quite a long moment. But he's about calling you as it becomes clear that another job is currently running late, courteous, and he takes the initiative in finding.
In addition, he stands behind his work. We found that a doorway expanded with the summer heat and humidity, which makes one of the locks that he installed difficult to lock. He was happy to come back and make adjustments at no cost.

This locksmith is no longer taking new clients. And, his phonemail says that if you are an existing client - you need to allow 48 hrs to get a call back. But by that time - you would be in real trouble if you're locked out of the home. A locksmith needs to be available .

My man Steve! He had been pretty valuable and changed out the guards I desired, and even instructed me on how to use it ( I purchased a keypad deadbolt ). The fees are fair. 65 to come out and also the fees for what's installed. Its ALOT less than other locksmiths and Steve is a reasonable dude. If work was needed by my buddies too, I would use him again and recommend him.

Steve" The Lock Doctor" came to my home on 12/17/12 and did a wonderful job for me. I assessed Yelp and other DC Neighborhood message forums and did my homework and his name kept coming up as the best. Here is. Please remember the other men utilize a central operator located in another state and dish tasks to people outside . Steve is genuinely a District of Columbia based one and business man operation. I enjoy that very much to know that the person doing the work is the proprietor rather than dealing with someone working out of their cellar in another state and receiving strangers to come to your home or business.
